The Royal Court's £10.6m renovation has begun

Work has begun on the first phase of the Royal Court's £10.6m renovation.

The stalls and circle areas will be completely refitted over the next few months, making the auditorium a much more comfortable space for the audience and improving disabled access to the stalls level. Audiences will see a big difference when the doors reopen in June for Dave Kirby’s Reds And Blues – The Musical.

The first phase has been made possible by a £867,800 grant from The Heritage Lottery as well as more than £200,000 raised by theatregoers in the form of a £1 per ticket levy.  The Royal Court Liverpool Trust, who are behind the renovation plan, has committed to using local firms wherever possible in the scheme and the architect who has drawn up the plans was raised and educated in the city.

Gillian Miller, founder and Chief Executive of the Royal Court Liverpool Trust: “It’s a great honour to be able to head up the campaign to renovate one of the city’s best loved buildings. We now need to make sure that we get it right for all those who are served by the building. From the older members of our community who enjoy the Royal Variety Lunch Club to the young people who take part in our annual Access All Areas project and perform on the same stage as the Trust’s Patron, Dame Judi Dench, who made her acting debut at the Royal Court in 1957.”
