A special event aimed at increasing the number of blood donors is taking place next Friday, 24 February in memory of Paul Rice, former CEO of the Commercial District BID.
The National Blood Service will be bringing their promotional vehicles into Williamson Square and encouraging people to register to give blood in memory of Paul.
This is the first of a number of events being held in aid of the charity that Paul set up before he died in recognition of the care he received on wards 7Y and 10Z in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
SPLOSH stands for Staff, Patients and Loved Ones Supporting Haematology. All monies raised will go directly to help staff and patients and families affected by blood cancers.
Tracey Crosbie Event Manager at City Central BID, who also worked for Paul for many years and has organised the event said: “Paul was an inspirational man and an extremely close friend and colleague to us all. When he was ill I asked if there was anything I could do, he simply said: “give blood” so this is all being done in honour of his memory.
“We’re expecting Williamson Square to be packed with people – the atmosphere will be great and we aim to raise money and get as many people as possible to sign up to be donors.“
The Blood Service Promotional vehicle will be on site from 10am until 4pm. The names of those who are donating in Paul’s Memory will be registered and the Dale Street Donor Centre will schedule separate three hour sessions dedicated to Paul.
Barbara Blanche, NHSBT’s lead donor relations manager for the North West, said: "Paul very kindly agreed to speak about his illness and subsequent treatment at an awards ceremony we held for long-standing blood donors last year.
"He was a fantastic speaker - he talked eloquently about how grateful he was to donors for providing the blood and plasma he received during his treatment at the Royal Liverpool. Paul also made the point that, no matter how good the medical staff there are, they would not have been able to help him without the generosity of blood donors, and that meant a lot to the donors there on the day - many of whom had given over 100 blood donations spanning 40 or 50 years.
"We hope that these special events will help recruit more donors like these who will go on to give blood for many years in memory of Paul."
And there will be fundraising activity taking place across the City as a special licence has been granted by Liverpool City Council to allow collections to be made for SPLOSH.
We expect that most people who attended the funeral to come to the event. All are invited to share memories over a drink and bite to eat at the Shakespeare pub on Williamson Square. They have kindly laid on a buffet for the guests.
