The story of James William Carling is the inspiring tale of a young Victorian artist following his dreams against all the odds and creating art and beauty in the face of abject poverty. James Carling was born in 1857 at 38 Addison Street, Liverpool 3. The offspring of Irish immigrants, James was born into extreme poverty, and in an effort to support his family, by 8 years of age James had taken to the streets, a superb 'Street Pavement Artist' known by everybody as “The Little Drawer” his work would have been seen on the pavements of Liverpool town centre.

The talented young artist had ambitions to travel to America had applied to study at The National School of Art but he died tragically aged just 29, and penniless.
